I just bought at our local Ritchie Brothers auction two Ingersoll Rand G80 mobile gensets, 66kw 3 phase, switchable 480 to 120vac, John Deere 4 cyl diesel, mounted on a tandem axel trailer. One is a 2006, the other a 2007.

These were sold as INOPERABLE so i got them both for $2,000.The 2006 started up just fine after a battery was installed, some minor fuel contamination, smelled like seawater. John Deere 4 cyl diesel runs great, but no output from genny, it actually looked too new, i believe its a new generator, a new AVR was installed, old one was nearby.Nothing missing on the panel, no faults, circuit breakers all good, just putting out zero, i suspect its lost its excitation. Waiting for proper instructions on how to reflash. The tires on both units were kinda bad, one flat, lots of cracking, i suspect these units were in storage awhile in harsh conditions, maybe near the ocean, but very minor corrosion. The 2007 i only gave a visual inspection, the gennie has signs of someone shooting a fire bottle into it, pulled off top cover, found a T terminal stud burnt in half, burnt terminals on two leads going to it, appears as if the nut backed off and while under load the terminals arc gouged the stud, i think its repairable. Have not started that engine yet, not till i repair the heavy leads.

Not sure if i'll keep one at home, they use between 3 to 5 gallons of fuel per hour, unit has a 105 gallon tank, all built into a nice tandem axel chassis, weighs just a bit under 5,000 pounds each, i believe they came from British Columbia. They sell new at around $41,000!I can get possibly something over $8k here in Alaska, they would be great for gold miners running 480 3 phase.

I got both for $2,000. One the 2006 i get nothing, no ac current or voltage at all, new generator, new AVR, unit sat for months if not longer, will do a flash on it one of these days, was all set up to do it first thing this morning but i had other things to do.On the 2007 smoke immediately came from the main windings, bogged the motor down, tripped a shutdown fault, i am pretty much figuring that generator is toast, rest of unit is in great shape. Going to drive 300 miles north to Fairbanks tomorrow morning, another heavy equipment auction, more gennies going cheap, i might get something a tad smaller like a 35k.They have all sizes, on skids, and mobile.

They even have a Magnum MN80, nearly identical to the Ingersoll G80. Drove from Wasilla to Fairbanks friday, a hair over 300 miles, mostly a high traffic two lane highway passing right by Mt. McKinley, took 5 hours. Pretty hot in Fairbanks, there is no night at this time of year.

Big equipment auction this weekend. I was hoping to find a couple of good deals, turns out almost everything was worn out crap the locals were throwing money at to get, a LOT of oil field trucks, worn out, high miles, ran on gravel roads in arctic conditions. They had a few generators, mostly the very big, but the skid mounted big units like 100k and up went cheap, under $1000, the mobiles were too high and they looked like junk. Everything was junk. Won't go to that auction anymore, its called First Strike, i'll stick with Ritchie Brothers, they are far better. There will be another one come around mid oct. A couple of days ago i managed to get caught up on some other projects and decided to bring the 2006 G80 in the shop, the one of the two that looked more promising to get operational. After removing nearly 5 gallons of water from the fuel tank i managed to get the engine running smoothly, took readings from the mains after disconnecting AVR and full fielding the exciter, only 155 volts across the legs on the 480 switch position. So i decided its time to physically look deeper, got everything unbolted from the rear panel and unplugged a few sockets, lifted up control panel with a cable winch strung to the lifting eye.

Made a rear case puller and pulled case off, tested armature, its good, all exciter windings looked good, pulled the diode plates off and lo and behold 2 out of the 6 were bad.Could not easily find them locally, even on Ebay they only come from china so i bought a set, only $32.00So it might be awhile before they show up, meanwhile there is an inoperable 60kw unit coming up at auction next weekend, looks like engine and not gen side, might try to get it cheap and put it in the 2007 unit. An update, turns out it was indeed a couple of bad diodes on the armature. After i put the new pair in and bolted everything up i got good voltage, actually too much, out of the three AVRs i had only one was good, and the panel volt meter was way off and would not calibrate so i swapped it out from the other unit. So i now have a fully functioning 66kw 3 phase generator for a backup to my concrete batch plant. Everything adjusted up to specs. But as far as the second G80 with the burnt up Leroy Somer i don't know yet, was quoted $5,000 to rewind it. Not going to happen.

Maybe I'll get lucky and find a similar genny with a bad engine come the june auction.
